As an independent PR consultant with over 25 years experience I regularly attend events as a Public Relations speaker to pass on my knowledge and expertise. I also adapt my talks and use them as workshops to train member companies or individuals in how to effectively use PR tactics.
These talks make great member events. If you hold away days, CPD events, young professionals training events, training workshops, annual conferences, etc., then have a look at the summaries below (a couple have videos of me in action) to see if any grab your attention and could be tailored for your membership. To ensure each talk is pitched at the right level for the group, I work closely with event teams and member services departments. My preferred approach is to involve the audience through Q&As rather than risk ‘death by PowerPoint’.
Book me as a Public Relations speaker for a member event
My talks cover the gamut of public relations, communications and marketing from specific to general topics. I leave delegates with nuggets of information that they can take away and put into practice straight away to enhance the quality of their work.
If you think an award-winning PR consultant with over 25 years experience, many of which have been for membership organisations, will add value to your event as a public relations speaker, have a read of the synopses below for examples of my most popular talks.
I am open to suggestions on other subjects – just ask!

Blooming business blogs
Blogs are an effective and efficient way to increase the online footprint of your organisation. They help establish and build your reputation, demonstrate your expertise, search engines love the fresh content so blogging can help your search ranking, they bring out the human side of your organisation, provide an opportnity for members to interact with you, etc. This talk covers the fundamentals of blogging including what blogging is all about, how to help the search engines, ways to promote your posts, and the pitfalls to avoid. I include up-to-date examples of blogs that work well, alongside ones that are shocking, to illustrate my points – so be warned … which list do you think yours would be on?
You in 140 characters or less
Many membership organisations lag behind some other types of business in adopting Twitter. I am a social media nut and love spreading the word about the flexibility and immediacy that Twitter provides. In this session I explain Twitter, from setting up an account, finding followers and time-saving tips that help ensure that Twitter does not take over your day. I include real examples of what works well to show what can be achieved. Watch out, attendees must be prepared to want to rush back to their desks and start tweeting!
PR is not rocket science
This is an excellent talk to give your members an introduction to public relations and what it means for them. Aimed primarily, though not exclusively, at micro businesses, this talk explains that for PR to be its most effective you must reach your target audience in as many different ways as you can. I use my 25+ years of experience to cover the very basics up to specific actions to take in order to kick-start activity and start attracting the business you need. Attendees will learn how to profile their audience and analyse the best ways to reach them (see the YouTube video below – it’s a bit fast so I suggest you hover over the pause button to read some of the slides). I include lots of practical tips and advice as well as real examples of what works well. I thrive on seeing the light-bulbs come on when attendees realise that public relations is not difficult once you think sensibly and target what you do.
What do you have in your PR toolkit?
Attendees learn about the different activities that they can use, e.g. podcasts, social media, networking, corporate branding, media relations, direct mail, etc to reach and engage their audiences. By the end of the session you will know which tools you want to use to maximise the return on investment of time and money. I include lots of practical tips and advice as well of real examples of what works well. I may even get attendees to play a game of PR Bingo, if time allows!
To discuss your requirements, get in touch with me. If none of the above topics appeal to you or your expected audience, have a chat with me as my experience covers a wide range of subjects and I am able to give talks on many more areas than are covered above.
